Software supports business-critical areas in almost all businesses and is an important part of numerous products. Due to that, software quality has become a decisive factor for the success of companies. Quality defects lead to increased operations and maintenance costs and cause subsequent damage through errors and lost business chances. Whereas in most industries, extensive and detailed norms mandate minimal requirements for the quality of products along with suitable testing processes, for software, so far there do not exist established regulations or guidelines. Due to their high degree of abstraction, existing frameworks, such as ISO 9126 or ISO 25000, do not offer applicable, real-world solutions.
Together with renowned partners from research and industry – Capgemini sd&m, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE, SAP, Siemens, and TU Munich – itestra GmbH is developing a quality standard for software products. Titled “QuaMoCo” (Software quality: Flexible modeling and integrated controlling), the project is funded by the German federal ministry for education and research for three years. Its aim is to render the capability and cost-effectiveness of software measurable, verifiable, and certifiable. A special focus is laid on quantifying the benefit of measures to increase quality and by that, creating chances for cost savings in companies.
